Small Rooms

We define small rooms as 40 square meters or less, but no less than 20 square meters (closer to 40 sqm than 20) and fairly rectangular in shape. Irregular rooms are OK, but more analysis will need to be performed in the specific case. The speaker placement is on a wall with minimum 3-5 meters width. The listening position should be at about 2x the distance between the speakers. The distance away from the walls depends on the solution proposed.

There are many combinations one can follow. In this case we propose solutions where the analogue is the reference source. In our test systems, however, we mostly use multiple mainstream blu ray DVD players and media servers with excellent results driving either the preamplifier directly or through a DAC.

The Components

All components outlined below are high grade, hand built, top quality components built in Denmark, Germany, Japan, Spain and Switzerland and are matched to form undisputable reference audio systems.

Analogue Source: Simon Yorke Designs S9

The S9 can be played with a variety of cartridges at various price points.
SYD S-9Alternatively, at a slightly higher budget, Bergmann Audio Sindre, air suspended turntable and parallel tone arm. It requires a cartridge with mass of 8g or more, which are traditionally more expensive. Lyra* Skala, Transfiguration* Phoenix or Orpheus will be excellent match.

Phono: FM Acoustics, Resolution Series FM 122 Phono Linearizer

The FM 122 Phono Linearizer comes with interchangeable resistance modules and RIAA specifications or fully adjustable ultra high-accuracy RIAA de-emphasis to match the production characteristics for each record label. This function is very critical for any one that has a respectable record collection, especially with recordings prior to formalization of the RIAA standards.

Preamplifier: FM Acoustics, Resolution Series, FM 155

This is the only full single ended preamplifier produced by FM Acoustics but can stand on its own merits as it is extremely musical and FM155can drive any balanced amplifier as well. It drives long interconnects with no signal loss, allowing for flexibility in placement and to have the amplifier near the speakers. (In our demo, we have 10m interconnects.) Easily compares to any pre amp double its price.

Amplifier: FM Acoustics, Classic Series, F 10B

Superb performance and truly outstanding music reproduction with uncanny naturalness. All amplification stages in pure Class A, output stages use FM ACOUSTICS' proprietary ClassA+AB. The amplifier remains absolutely stable even with the most complex loads.

Alternatively, the FM Acoustics, Resolution Series 111 monoblocks can be utilized for increased power. They are discrete, dynamic, natural, and unobtrusive; definitely not for those that need to show off the size or weight. But stack it up against any amp whatever the size and the surprise will be inverse to its diminutive size...FM 111

The FM 111 employs full FM Acoustics Resolution Series technology and uses the same enhanced Class A stages and superb protection systems. The FM 111 can be placed next to the speakers or in any remote location (even when power is switched on remotely the FM 111 keeps all the features of delayed turn-on, all protection circuitry intelligence, etc). Within 10 seconds it is fully operational and sounds perfect (unlike other power amplifiers that need a long warm up time).

Combining the FM 111 with the FM 122, FM 133, FM 155 it is possible to assemble a top class reproduction system that will far outperform most systems costing up to three times their total price.

Loudspeaker: German Physiks, The HRS 120

Our recommendation includes both the normal or upgraded Carbon form, which is our clear reference if the budget allows. As with all German-Physiks loudspeakers the key feature of the HRS 120 is the use of our unique DDD driver. One of the most important advantages of the DDD driver is the very high speed with which it is able to respond to sudden changes in the music. These are referred to as transients and are what gives music its sense of life and dynamics. HRS 120 CarbonThe DDD driver is coupled to an excellent bass system around an 8in driver (10in in Carbon edition), resulting to an outstanding small footprint loudspeaker. The HRS 120 is the entry speaker system for a reference system but can be a major upgrade to most high end systems in terms of dynamics, transparency, accuracy, and frequency response.

<*> Lyra and Transfiguration are our preferred cartridges. However, we have no affiliation with either manufacturer and the models used in our systems have been purchased in the open market.
